CLI reference
Every Joring CLI command, what it does, and what to run when capture is not working.
The CLI captures AI tools that run outside the browser — Claude Code, Codex, and desktop applications. Install it from Install Joring. On macOS it needs macOS 15 or later and runs on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
Commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
joring login | Authenticate via device authorization. Opens a browser to approve. |
joring logout | Revoke the refresh token server-side and remove local credentials. |
joring start | Trust the local CA, start the daemon, and enable secure local capture. |
joring stop | Disable capture, remove the exact trusted Joring CA, stop the daemon, and remove owned runtime state. |
joring status | Show capture, catalog, CA, queue, and per-surface status. |
joring update | Update the CLI to the latest version. |
joring diagnose | Write local diagnostics to a file for support. |
joring start is what actually turns capture on. Installing and signing in
without running it leaves the CLI connected but capturing nothing.
When something is not captured
Run joring status first. It shows whether local capture is live, which signed
catalog revision it applied, CA readiness, and the last match and upload for
each supported surface.
Three things account for nearly every gap:
joring startwas never run. Install and login alone do not enable capture.- Local-capture approval is pending. Approve Joring's system prompt, then restart the AI application if it was already running.
- The local CA is not trusted. Desktop application capture depends on it.
joring statusreports this;joring startinstalls it.
If none of those explain it, joring diagnose writes a file to attach to a
support request.
The local certificate authority
To read traffic from desktop applications, the CLI installs a local certificate
authority on your machine. It exists only on that machine, is used only to
inspect traffic from AI tools Joring supports, and is removed by joring stop.
On macOS, Joring uses a bundled system component that macOS asks you to approve
once. On Windows, the installer asks for administrator approval once and sets
up the Joring Agent service; capture then starts without a prompt for every
account on the PC. On Linux, the package asks for your password once to
install the Joring helper service; capture then starts without a prompt, and
joring stop removes the certificate from the system trust store through
that service.
